How Skype is reinventing itself getting call recording and other features

It has been a while since Skype has been relegated to the background while new applications like Whatapp video call, Google Hangouts, Google Duo, Line, etc. have been enjoying the limelight. Simply because there are much better alternatives on most platforms, such as Google Hangouts and Discord. According to an announcement from Microsoft, Skype will soon be getting a call recording feature on Android along with other platforms. Since it is a cloud-based feature, a user can use Skype from anywhere and from any operating system. It combines all screens shared in the call, along with webcams and, of course, audio.

While technically Skype supported call recording fifteen years ago, this is its first official acknowledgement. Users looking to record their Skype calls had to look towards alternatives, which resulted in high bounce-rates because Skype directed users to a paid subscription option. On Android, that proved somewhat of a difficult task years ago when screen recording required root. Now screen recording is a lot easier, but built-in support offers much more robustness. For privacy reasons, all users in the call are notified if a user is recording.

This new call recording feature comes as part of the Skype 8.0 version. It features a new mobile-like user-interface on desktops and supports Twitter-like mentions and full end-to-end encryption. 1080p video calling support has also been added, and one single video call allows up to 24 people to log in at one time. There’s now a chat media gallery too, where you can see all of your shared photos in a conversation.

While Skype is clearly trying to gain a foothold back into the market, it surely did not make most of its first mover’s advantage. Alternative applications have had a long time to take off and Microsoft has only started to pay attention to it is VoIP service in about the last two years. With the addition of Skype Insider too, it’s clear that the service is no longer on the backburner. We will just have to see how it fares in the coming months and whether or not the service can make a true comeback in terms of usage numbers and popularity index.

2018 Best Six Steps to Achieve Digital Marketing Excellence
2018 Best Six Steps to Achieve Digital Marketing Excellence

When trying to create a digital marketing strategy, the first thing to think about is what are the end objectives of the campaign. Laying out the objective clearly before we begin helps a great deal in getting the best out of all contributors.

If you are an agency, you should not just think about your customers – you should think about your customers’ customers – viz. what would the digital marketing strategy help achieve. Achieving digital marketing excellence means being able to reach the right audience, creating the relevant content, understanding your consumers’ pain points so you can better address the problem, and working toward building a better, stronger service or product, based on your customers’ feedback.

When starting to build a digital marketing strategy that is customer-centric and focused on achieving this excellence, you should first take a deep dive into your current efforts and determine what needs to be done in order to improve it. Please find below six digital capabilities you should start to review in order for your organization to thrive and achieve the level of digital marketing excellence that meets your needs.

  1. CREATE A STRATEGY BEFORE YOU GO ONLINE

Many companies start their digital marketing action plan without a strategic approach, which could cause them to oversee or miss out on greater opportunities. An initial strategy will provide you with direction, focus and a better, deeper understanding of your customers.

  1. Determine where you are right now and evaluate what you need in order to get to where you/your client(s) want to be.
  2. Establish a vision and validate your priorities.
  3. Create a roadmap and carefully design how you will benefit with this digital transformation so you can get every person you need on board.
  1. ESTABLISH KPIS TO TRACK (& IMPROVE) PERFORMANCE

Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) is crucial for monitoring the success or failure of your digital marketing efforts. Use lifetime-value KPIs with a structured conversion rate optimization (CRO) program in place. You should have the right analytics tools to interpret the data correctly and improve performance. You also need to obtain the correct customer feedback, define goals and KPIs and have a clear vision and web analytics strategy.

  1. Stage 1: Reaching Your Audience
    1. Advertising: Impressions, cost per click, cost per conversion
    2. Trade Shows/Events: Registration, attendees, satisfaction
    3. Website/Blog: SEO, user sessions, engagement rate, conversion rate
    4. Social Media: Connections
  2. Stage 2: Leading the audience towards call-to-action

    1. Website/Blog: Subscribers, backlinks, downloads
    2. Social Media: Engagement, conversions
    3. Leads: Quality, conversions
  3. Stage 3: Conversion

    1. Website/Blog: Returning visitors, transactions (e-commerce)
    2. Leads: Cost per lead
  4. Stage 4: Engagement
    1. Website/Blog: Open rate, click-through rate, unsubscribe rate
    2. Social Media: Customer Advocacy
    3. ROI: Customer lifetime value, cost per acquisition (CPA), NPS

  1. INTEGRATE ONLINE CAMPAIGNS WITH OFFLINE INITIATIVES
    1. It is important to seek agreement from top-level management to construct the path we want to achieve. They should become an integral part of the strategy development to ensure an appropriate integration of online and offline efforts.
    2. This way, we can set specific goals and strategies and integrate digital marketing into other business activities for better results. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have management advocate your efforts for future projects and develop a better relationship.
    3. Developing a workshop with the management team at the beginning of a project helps companies understand what you are going to help them do, and who needs to be constantly involved for a better execution. For example, integrate your sales and marketing teams to communicate and align department goals for the project. Both teams sharing goals helps them coordinate better.

  1. OPTIMUM UTILISATION OF RESOURCES
    1. Having the right balance and blend of marketing skills is critical – if this cannot be achieved in-house, companies can also outsource this mix.
    2. It’s not just about having the right people but providing them the right resources for them to work together, that includes the right tools and budget.

  1. DATA ANALYTICS

You need to be able to analyse the attribution of every effort, and without the right technologies in place, you won’t have the data.

  1. Having the right data helps us make better decisions. This begins with acquiring the relevant data for campaign outreach.
  2. One should be looking to obtain integrated systems and technologies that provide a holistic view of the acquired data.
  3. Technology is a crucial element for marketing nowadays, but you still do not need a big investment in order to have access to certain tools. Some examples of useful technologies to obtain smarter data include:
    1. Site Audience Comparison: Alexa, Google Analytics
    2. Digital Analytics Tools: Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics
    3. SEO Keyword Analysis: Google AdWords, Google Trends, SEMrush
    4. SEO Rank Checking: Google Search Console, MOZ, SEMrush

  1. INTEGRATING CUSTOMER COMMUNICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
    1. A correct integrated customer communications strategy means your multi-channel communications strategy is developed for individuals who are at a different stage in their buying journey. It has to deliver the right message with the correct value proposition across the different devices and channels. E.g., if a customer clicks on a link in your email or constantly interacts with a piece of content on your site, you should be able to trigger a personalized message with relevant recommendations.
    2. It is important to have a strategy that is media-optimized for ROI and that, at the same time, maximizes your customer lifetime value (CLV). Put an integrated, personalized site in place with the correct mix of paid, owned and earned media attribution.

These six capabilities will help you prioritize and determine the right plan for you to move to a more advanced level. Do not expect an overnight turnaround – it is about moving at the correct pace and always having your customers’ expectations at the core of everything. Achieving digital marketing excellence doesn’t mean being a more profitable company necessarily, it means being a company which offers better customer experience – profitability is an offshoot of that.

WhatsApp beta update introduces mute button

WhatsApp beta update introduces mute button
WhatsApp beta update introduces mute button

WhatsApp is working on a couple of new features – a new ‘Mute’ and ‘Mark as Read’ button for all users having the latest WhatsApp beta version. The new mute button is different from the earlier mute option in a way that it emerges on the message notification automatically once you receive more than 51 messages from one contact. The new mute shortcut was seen in an update that was submitted through the Google play Beta Program, bringing the version up to 2.18.216 version.

As reports suggest, the mute feature will allow the users to mute chats by simply long pressing and selecting the mute option. This means that user will no longer have to open the application and can directly access the feature from the control panel. This significantly reduces the number of clicks/taps required to execute the desired functionality – something that was Steve Jobs’ mantra while reviewing any new feature developed by Apple, seamlessly binding smooth front-end user-interface with back-end program efficiency.

Though the mute button is now live for everyone using the latest WhatsApp beta version on their Android devices, the ‘Mark as Read’ button that was spotted alongside the ‘Mute’ button last week has not been released even for beta testers. WhatsApp is also bringing a sticker preview. Whatsapp media announcements also posted some screenshots of the upcoming WhatsApp Stickers pack and it looks like there will be at least two sticker packs that will come preloaded with the app update. It is currently unclear when WhatsApp Stickers would roll out to beta users, if not to the users of the stable build. Apart from these features, there are some other new features as well for groups that Whatsapp has rolled out.

All the updates and newly added features make Whatsapp retain its leadership position in the highly competitive sphere of instant messaging since it was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former employees of Yahoo!.
