Record number of candidates clear UGC NET 2018 results declared
On behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced holding of the National Eligibility Test (NET) on July 08, 2018. NET is a national level entrance exam for Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian Universities and Colleges. CBSE conducted NET in 84 subjects at 91 cities spread across the country.
The candidates who qualify for the award of JRF are eligible to pursue research in the subject of their post-graduation or in a related subject and are also eligible for the post of Assistant Professor. The universities, institutions, IITs and other national organizations may select the JRF awardees for full-time research work in accordance with the procedure prescribed by them. The award of JRF and/or eligibility for Assistant Professor will depend on the performance of the candidate in all three papers of NET. However, the candidates qualifying exclusively for Assistant Professor will not be considered for award of JRF.
From last year’s 38,000 candidates clearing the exam, this year over 55,000 candidates have cleared the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET 2018) to qualify as assistant professor and get the grant for JRF, which is the highest-ever number of candidates to have passed the exam. Another first, CBSE took just three weeks to announce these results, as the board used to take at least three months to do that.
Although 11.48 lakh candidates had registered, 8.59 lakh appeared for the exam, around 6.5% of whom finally made the cut. For the first time, it was made into a two-tier exam (one general, meant for all candidates, and a subject paper) from the earlier three-tier pattern. Yet another record for this year, the numbers of candidates registered (11,48,235) and appeared (8,59,498) were also the highest ever for the exam. And this time the number of candidates shortlisted was increased to around 6.5% due to the bunching of marks against the usual UGC norms of 6%.
In the third week of July, the board uploaded OMR (optical mark resolution) sheet images and the answers, and invited challenges till July 27. According to CBSE sources, it received three kinds of challenges – some blackened two circles of the same question and requested the board to consider only one circle, others asked for subject change at the time of the examination and some candidates pointed out a few corrections in questions. While the first two challenges were turned down, the board put the third challenge before experts and implemented their advice.

Let us also have a look at a frequently-asked-question regarding MBA.
It is often a point of extreme confusion for many MBA aspirants to choose between a general MBA and a sectoral MBA. It is easy to say you should go for a sectoral MBA program from an institute, only if you know what your goals are and where your interests lie. You can always go for a generic managerial job despite a degree in a specialised course later. On the other hand, a general MBA program will give you an opportunity to choose your field of work after you have gained a working knowledge of the business functions and strategies, if you want to take your time to decide what field you wish to work in.
A general MBA would provide you an overall understanding of the various functional domains involved in business management, like finance, operations, and human resources. A sectoral MBA, however, prepares you for particular sectors like business analytics, retail, entrepreneurship, energy, media, etc. While a general MBA from a reputed business school is seen as a more disciplined study of the fields involved by many recruiters, a sectoral MBA would give you an edge over the others in preparing you for a particular industry. The firms dealing with sectors like energy, telecom and health care prefer recruitment via these management schools because their students are already familiar with the technical work requirements and would require a shorter training period as compared to the others.
The growth rate of a particular sector, however, is expected to influence the recruitment scene for a particular year. For example, International Business and Retail Management jobs may go through a slump for a particular duration. It is up to you to research the industrial growth and job prospects in the sector of your choice. On the other hand, the general MBA degree is often valued more for its academic rigour when being considered for upper-level managerial jobs with its wider knowledge base. It is needless to say, however, that your personal ambition and preference is the most important deciding factor when it comes to you landing a job in any sector whatsoever.
Here is a list of institutes with sectoral MBA programs worth mentioning:
- IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand) is an autonomous institute located in Anand, Gujarat, and offers Post Graduate Program in Rural Management, with a mission to promote sustainable, eco-friendly development of rural areas through professional management. It is highly under-rated as of yet, and has a great placement record.
- TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) offers MA in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations. It is a highly specialised program, equivalent to an MBA, with a reputed placement record.
- IIM, Ahmedabad offers PGP-FABM (Food & Agri-business Management), a well-reputed specialised management with an emphasis on student-recruiter fit.
- IIM, Lucknow also offers PGP-ABM (Post Graduate Program in Agri-business Management), a full-time residential program with a strong international orientation.
- MICA (Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad) offers Post Graduate Diploma in Management-Communications (PGDM-C) as its flagship program and is quite a reputed institute for strategic marketing and communication.
- IIM, Bangalore offers PGPEM (Post Graduate Program in Enterprise Management), a 22-month (weekend) residential program.
- MBA in Financial Management by Department of Financial Studies (DFS), DU, South Campus.
It is easy to assume an institute’s legitimacy in teaching a particular sectoral course by looking at their names, sometimes. For example, IIFT (Indian Institute for Foreign Trade) offers MBA in International Business, which sounds like a sectoral MBA, but is more generic in its nature. Similarly, SCMHRD markets itself as an institute for Personnel Management and Business Analytics, and SIIB as one for International Business. When thinking about your options for pursuing MBA in any of these sectors, you should be cautious, and only go for the institutes that have reputed faculty and an accountable placement record to show for it.
