Takht – Is Karan Johar trying to rediscover his agenda?
While Karan Johar has been a commercially successful and overly popular director , producer with a band on business approach in movie making we have hardly seen him appreciating or championing the cause of realistic cinema or fresh no-so-well-connected talent. Also his movie making has been primarily romedy, emo-rom movies with heightened melodrama. Though he smartly listed him in few good ventures as a production partner, like the Baahubali series or Bombay Talkies or recently released Lust Stories there is hardly any substantial content credited to his name to make him a great director or patron of the art. He has been there and done the best in masala, live life king size and let’s objectify women and let’s worship over hyped heroes genre of movie making.

Announcing a movie like Takht especially under his direction comes as a pleasant surprise where the story touches battle to gain power in high corridors of Mughal empure. He is dealing with real characters, real history this time. Off course we can expect extravagant sets, high on dose of glamour but there might be some freshness in the taste and presentation.

With Ranveer Singh on board the expectations rise all time high.  Alia Bhat, Kareena Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Bhumi Pednekar make a new mixture and they raise our hopes around the movie.

It will be interesting to see how the venture fares!

You will be shocked to see how the American audience responded to this billionaire boy club movie

You will be shocked to see how the American audience responded to this billionaire boy club movie. The Hindi Film Industry has tried to emulate Hollywood over the last many years now. The real question is that while the Indian filmmakers have, many a times, sought inspiration from Hollywood and adopted best practices, will the Indian audience also take a cue from their Hollywood counterparts in standing up for what is right?

This comes after the astonishingly indifferent response to the release of the movie Billionaire Boys Club, released in July 2018. The movie grossed only $126 on its opening day! And this was because the movie starred Kevin Spacey – someone who is facing at least 30 accusations of assault. And it was surprising to witness such solidarity from an audience, which is otherwise divided between geographies, age-groups, cultures and preferences. And it was not just the audience which was sensitive towards the serious charges, Netflix fired Spacey from the popular series House of Cards, in which he played the lead role, and also cancelled the Gore Vidal biopic which was starring Spacey.

This stand sends out a clear message – neither consumers nor fraternity will associate with someone who abuses the social fabric and/or the law. But this is the stand taken by people in the USA. When would the people in India respond in a similar manner to the inadequacies of public figures? We love to compare Hollywood and Bollywood, but the response received by the #MeToo campaign in Hollywood is completely different from the response received in Bollywood.

Although the honourable Indian courts have given their verdicts, in cases presented before them, of public figures stepping on the wrong side of the law. Also, the public figures in question have sincerely abided by the legal sentence meted out to them. But we only wish that the Indian audience and the Indian fraternity bring out a stronger front in times of displaying a collective conscience which is India.

7 Bollywood Comedy Films Which Became Cult Movies

Silent movies of Charlie Chaplin have demonstrated that comedy resonates with global audiences across barriers of countries, language and culture. But ever since dialogues appeared in Indian movies with Alam Ara being the ‘first Indian talkie’ in 1931, voice & dialogues have been used in myriad ways to appeal to the funny bone of the Indian audience.

We have compiled an eclectic list of 7 Hindi comedy movies which may or may not have enjoyed box-office success at the time of their release, but later on went on to acquire the status of cult movies!

Sharmila Tagore’s character is in awe of her brother-in-law Om Prakash’s character for his intelligence. Her husband, played by Dharmendra, decides to take up the challenge of fooling her brother-in-law and goes to work for him, impersonating as a driver. A hilarious comic story unfolds as the characters interact with each other. The movie is loaded with veteran actors like Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Om Prakash, Asrani, David and Keshto Mukherjee. This film, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, is highly remembered for Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan’s comic act which came in the same year when the all-time blockbuster Sholay was released.
